Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has found there is no use of giving over the counter drugs to your kids if they suffer from cold or cough. The common cold and cough drugs sold over the counter are doing no good in improving your kid’s health. In fact they can induce certain side effects in children like hallucination, drowsiness etc. I am always wary of the drugs sold as cold remedy. Not only in kids, even with adults also, cold is one disease which goes away on its own. Like my daughter’s pediatrician says,” If you take medicine, the cold will be gone in a week and if you don’t take medicine you will be well in seven days.” You can read more about the effects of cold and cough medicines on kids here.

I believe this to be true. I do find, though, that when my daughter has a cold, Children’s Benadryl is great for her congestion, because it’s the congestion that causes her cough. At night, I give her Benadryl and spread Vicks on her chest. I also make sure that her head is elevated. That usually helps her not to cough, or not to cough so much, until her cold goes away. But no cough medicine, no other OTC cold medicine.
